Re: High School Football

Speaking of PV...there's another prime example...With that talent...and all the backs they had...even their best one was playin as a reciever...put that talent in the I and run the option offense...and throw off of playaction...that would be devastating to anyone. There means to be some misconception about running the ball on here. Smash mouth isn't just "slammin; it between the tackles". A team is most effective once it establishes it's off-tackle game, and then using quick pitches, sweeps, FB traps, counter traps, and the like to beat a defense down. Then hit em deep a few times. It doesn't mean 30 dives and isos per half.

    Re: High School Football

I don't know what kids all over the state do...but i do know what alot of them here do. I only comment on what i know about. But, seriously, last fall i saw alot of teams, and didn't hear many pads pop...I guess the only devastating hit i saw was Murphy on Anderson..besides that not much. It seems no one wants to get low, put a shoulder in someone's midsection and explode. Instead, i saw a whole lot of arm tackling. Teams from this area just need to get back to what it has always been known for: great defense, hard nosed running with occasional passes, and bringin home state trophies.

PV would have been great running Middlesboro KY's offense. They call it an option but their QB threw for 2100 yards and rushed for nearly 1000 more.

PV's bread and butter for most every crown they won was an I with about every variation you could think of...ran the option out of it as well...had a large scale passing game built in it too...with the success they had with it and the players they have year in and year out it still puzzles me why they ever went away from it

Yeah, I still don't understand how they were no better than they were last year with all that talent

Most seem to forget that when PV was winning most, not all of those state titles , they had a couple of guys named the Jones brothers in the backfield. The Pinkstons are good but not the same caliber as Thomas and Julius, PV also had some studs at RB the other years, Keith Hall, Eupton Jackson, Forty Jackson to name a few, the Pinkstons are just not in the same league talent wise as those people. Maybe just maybe PV' splayers are just not as good as Phil has everyone to believe they are when he talks about them in the paper, just my opinion though.

WHen its said and done, Myron Pinkston will be mentioned with the great PV backs, realize he was a freshman and 15 years old who didint get a lot of reps into the middle to late part of the season.

If PV runs the option, they will not ever win a title. If you look at those walls at PV, you see many lineman up there. Unless you saw the game at Giles, you wouldnt understand how overmatched they were, not one lineman could handle anything Giles had. But hey if they had wanted it more, Im sure they could have thrown that 6'5 305 Lbs lineman Giles had to Blacksburg

    Re: High School Football

PV won 4 titles before the jones's. Those teams were champs because of their "d". But, during that stretch PV's "o" featured mostly isos traps and options. Most of the time ran out if the I. In addition, that "o" lit up the scoreboard for years. Folks can say what they want, but in that system they were far more successful than they have been in the spread. And as far as the game at Giles goes, u'll not beat everyone. I went to the game and i saw what PV played against. What you have to consider is that PV's "o"-line was tryin to block Giles from a 2-pt stance. That's where they were dominated from. Put 'em in a 3- point stance from the beginning of 2-a-days and get out of the spread and see what happens. They would not have beaten Giles still, but at least they would have had a fighting chane making Giles read and deal with misdirection instead of letting them pin their ears back and demolish the entire offense. BTW, Delmas Lawson was PV's best back last year even if he was playing as a reciever. Put him in as a stud tailback and you'll see that PV has one on the same level as the hall, and Jacksons from the 80's. The Pinkstons aren't far behind either. PV has the pieces to be great. But the system needs to revert back to PV's proven recipe for success.

Defense wins Championships. That is what I feel Gate City's problem was last year and will be this year if there isnt a change.

Bottom line, if you can run the ball on offense and stop the run on defense you'll go a long way
